30-Week Blog Challenge Week 11: Nicknames

I'm back with the Monday blog challenge! The lady in charge is Marie at Mom Gets Real. The questions are right here:

And Week 11's prompt is . . .

NICKNAMES YOU HAVE AND WHY!

Oh noes. Now I have to explain all these? ::facepalm::

Ivy: That's basically my name in many places in my normal life, actually, and has been my longest-lasting nickname since high school. My best friend Meghan was a big fan of the Xanth series by Piers Anthony and she decided I should get hooked on the books. For whatever reason she decided we were similar to the twin princesses Ida and Ivy, and both of us still have an e-mail address that incorporates our Xanthian nickname. Princess Ivy had a magical talent that allowed her to enhance people's abilities. Hmm.

SwankiVY: Combining the above "Ivy" with the word "swank," I came up with what would eventually become a commonly used online handle. I used the word "swank" because one of my friends identified it as a style of music in a song I liked, and in 1995 sometime I needed a weird-sounding nickname to put on my SubGenius card.

If I have to explain "Queen of Budgiland,"
I will be here all day.
Fairly obvious nicknames derived from either Ivy, SwankiVY, or Julie are sometimes thrown around, such as JuJu, Ives, or Swank/Swanks. Someone I didn't like once called me Skankivy but obviously no one I like calls me that.

I also have a friend called Victor who sometimes abbreviates "Ivy" to "Vee" or "Little V" (where he is "Big V"). I am vertically challenged and sort of fairylike so I guess it shouldn't surprise anyone that I am also frequently called nicknames that make reference to this; some of the favorites have been Pixie, Tiny, and Sprite. A couple people have jokingly called me Kira before because they think I look like the character from The Dark Crystal, but that one hasn't stuck as a nickname.

Can't imagine why anyone ever said I looked like a gelfling!
I have also been called Hairball (for possibly obvious reasons), Booger (for reasons only obvious to the guy who called me that), and Stevie (because of something to do with Stevie Nicks, I'm not sure).

That's about all the nicknames I can think of!

  1. I've never really had any nicknames--other than some version of my name.

Sue, Suz, Suzie Q. And it's been more or less one person who uses a name, not everyone. Maybe it's cause Suzi is unique enough. I never had anybody in my grade with my name. Now Julies on the other hand... always plenty of them around. (Plus it's the name of my oldest friend who I've known since I was a baby.)
