End-of-Year Survey 2021

Here's my year-end survey for 2021!

1. What did you do in 2021 that you'd never done before?

Started singing in a band with my dad.

Met my friend Fen in person.

Helped my mom get cataract surgery.

Got fully vaccinated against a plague.

Flew on an airplane during a pandemic.

Attended a same-sex wedding.

Hosted Thanksgiving.

Hosted a Christmas Eve party.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Last year, these were my resolutions, and whether I kept them:

  • E-mail. Get caught up and STAY CAUGHT UP. [Struggled with this, but got close to caught up!]
  • Learn to put myself to bed. No more falling asleep on the floor or with my contacts in. Get a bedtime routine and go to BED! [Well . . . not really.]
  • Complete my photos page on the new domain. [Getting closer, but didn't complete.]
  • Maintain my healthy choices and my weight that I finally managed to hit this year. [Mostly!]
  • Make time for writing projects. Finish at least one book in progress. [Did make some more time for writing projects! Didn't finish a book.]
  • Continue to submit short stories. [Did some more submissions!]
  • Complete my Steven Universe variant comic books collection! [Still missing the ones I was missing.]
  • Actually follow through on drinking more water. [Hmm . . . not really.]
  • Less scrolling on Tumblr and Facebook; more working on projects. Set a timer and stick to it. [Hmm . . . not really.]
  • Help my mom with some important stuff and touch base with her more often. [Did OK on this.]
  • Draw more fun projects. [Not so much.]
  • Get a literary agent for my fiction projects. [Didn't stay on this.]
  • Become more adventurous with my home cooking. [This I think I did.]
  • Improve on ukulele. [This I think I did.]

I'll keep it shorter this year.

  1. Maintain my walking goals and health goals.
  2. Accomplish something new with publishing.
  3. Accomplish something new with completing a writing project.
  4. Really get some serious work done on the website.
  5. Don't waste so much time.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Nobody particularly close to me. My old pal Brent had a baby just this month but we aren't really in touch.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

  • My friend Libby died of cancer this year. She lived much longer than she was expected to. I'll miss her wonderful blog posts and I'm so sad for her husband and four sons.
  • Victor's mother died. I met her once and the world is colder with her loss.
  • I also lost a former coworker named Evan to Covid.
  • And my financial adviser Jack passed away after a long illness. He was a funny guy and a good person.

5. What countries did you visit?

My backyard.

6. What would you like to have in 2022 that you lacked in 2021?

  • Vacations.
  • Gatherings without fear.
  • As always, a book deal.
  • A copy of the SU comic I'm missing!
  • A performance with the band.
  • Less stress.

7. What dates from 2021 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

  • January 6: Ugh. The whole country knows why.
  • February 14: My friend Victor began a long hospital stay.
  • March 12: First practice with my new band.
  • April 23: Met Fen in person!
  • May 12: Fully vaccinated.
  • October 15: Cara's wedding.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Mostly maintained my hard work from last year's health plan, keeping up with my 10,000 steps a day plan.

Kept up with both webcomics, my YouTube channel, my daily journaling, reviewing books, and karaoke posts.

Survived an entire year working from home.

Finished a short story.

Kept my house quite tidy.

Learned a bunch of songs and became a better performer.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Wasting time.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

I had side effects after my booster vaccine. And I had a week or so where I was having an unexplained fast heartbeat again, but I don't know why and it hasn't returned. I hurt my toe really badly and thought I might have broken it (and maybe I did, I don't know). And at my last doctor's visit I was told to eat more fiber to keep my cholesterol down and take a Vitamin D supplement.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

I really enjoyed my shopping spree at the Cartoon Network online shop when it was closing. I bought a bunch of shirts and pillows and coffee cups.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

  • All the people who did what they were supposed to in the pandemic, from mask-wearing to vaccines.
  • The scientists and health care workers who did what they did this year to promote health and prevent loss of life.
  • My friend Steve who finished a composition degree.
  • My friend Meg who is meeting her goals amazingly and somehow pulling through after such a rough year since losing her husband.
  • Katelyn who graduated and got her first nursing job.
  • Everyone who gave up personally meaningful gatherings, trips, and events to help keep others safe.
  • My queer friends.
  • Everyone who worked to counter the false narratives about the election.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

  • As usual, Donald Trump and his supporters.
  • People who spread lies and conspiracy theories (many of which have their roots in antisemitism).
  • Everyone who contributed to the coronavirus outbreak by refusing to listen to science and boycotting masks because inconveniencing themselves to literally save someone's life was too much of an imposition on their personal freedom.
  • People who are intentionally attending spreader events when they do not need to.
  • People who use tragedy to capitalize.
  • Every single fatphobe.
  • People who blamed oppressed people for their own oppression.
  • Rich people who got richer during the pandemic and aren't giving back.
  • People who expect me and others to clean up the messes they made.
  • People who think it's edgy to repeatedly engage in behaviors they have been asked to stop for the purpose of upsetting others and then minimizing their pain.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Besides rent, I spent it on collectibles, lending/contributing to causes, and a trip to Michigan.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Doing a panel and a costume for Metrocon.

Smoothies.

Seeing Meghan again after it was safe.

My Steven Universe collection.

Cara's wedding.

Cleaning my garage (yes, really).

Meeting Fen and watching cartoons with Fen.

Talking to Daria about Steven Universe.

Getting vaccinated.

Going back to restaurants before it was taken away again.

Christmas dessert.

16. What song will always remind you of 2021?

"What You Need."

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder?

Happier.

ii. thinner or fatter?

About the same, technically a little fatter.

iii. richer or poorer?

Richer.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Writing fiction, completing projects, being creative, practicing ukulele, being a little more active in the asexual community, documenting things I failed to document.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Revisiting old drama, being patient with people who take it for granted, staying up late for no reason.

20. How did you spend Christmas?

My sister Lindsay and her husband Mike came over for Christmas Eve (and I had Mom and Jeaux there). We had a nice dinner and exchanged gifts. Mom fell asleep at my house so I saw her for part of the morning on Christmas Day, but after she left, I spent the day by myself.

21. How will you be spending New Year's Eve?

My friends Yasmin and Arthur are coming over for finger food and karaoke.

22. Did you fall in love in 2021?

None of my relationships with other people could be described as "falling in love." I maintain that I have all the love I want in my life.

23. How many one-night stands?

I should probably just delete this question from the survey. But then I'd have to re-number and ew.

24. What was your favorite TV program?

Steven Universe is still my undisputed favorite, but this year I discovered the delights of HildaCentaurworld, and Amphibia.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

I kinda think I do.

26. What was the best book you read this year?

My favorite book this year was The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives in Your Home by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

I'm gonna sound bandwagon-y and say I really dug Lil Nas X this year.

Also that I can apparently sing the song "Highway to Hell" without sounding too ridiculous.

28. What did you want and get?

Great times playing music with the band, satisfying conversations online and off, a home that continues to be comfortable, the confidence to stand up for my needs even when it's painful, a vaccine, a stable work environment, some really fun ace events, some progression on political issues, some great stories, some quality time with my writing.

29. What did you want and not get?

My New York trip, the satisfaction of completing another novel, more progress for social issues, some peace when it comes to a couple people I'm always worried about (nope, still worried), basic good behavior from people who should know better, the missing comic books from my collection, and a downgrade of the pandemic to an epidemic (nope, still a pandemic).

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

I didn't watch any movies this year except Tick...Tick...BOOM! and Encanto. I liked the former better.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I turned 43. I wore a king costume and made myself funfetti pancakes, then spent a nice day not doing much. In the late evening my sisters and I got on Zoom and they watched me open presents. I got a bunch of nice stuff, including books, a mask, a Comfy wearable blanket, a blender, a funny coffee mug from my sister, a pair of slippers from my sister, and some clothes.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Maybe if losers hadn't tried to hijack our democracy?

Also, sure, a book deal.

And seeing Meggie more and family more.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2021?

The Comfy.

34. What kept you sane?

Polos with Meghan and Patricia, Stephen Colbert, coffee, music, stress cleaning, being out in the sun.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Oh, you silly survey.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

January 6th and the proceedings are pretty important, but I haven't done anything in response besides just be really annoyed and grouchy about it. The issue I've taken actual action on, as usual, is queer community rights and education.

37. Who did you miss?

C'mon.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

I honestly haven't met anyone new.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2021.

Saying no is both hard and necessary.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

"But wait, if I could shake the crushing weight of expectations, would that free some room up for joy, or relaxation, or simple pleasure, instead we measure this growing pressure"

Personal Digest Saturday (but posted on Sunday!): December 18 – December 24

Life news this week:

  • Saturday I got a slow start to the day because I was arguing with people on Reddit. Got my podcast stuff planned and looked up holiday recipes to plan for my holiday meal set for Christmas Eve. Got the blogging done too. Ran out of time to get all my steps in and didn't quite have enough time to finish, but it was close enough. Daria and I recorded our episodes for "Same Old World" and "Barn Mates." I looked at recipes some more after talking to her.

  • Sunday I redecorated for the solstice season. I had been planning to go to Mom's but she flaked again. Got sprayed by the water hose while I was doing maintenance on my water system. Took out trash and did laundry. Planned meals and wrote my comic. Did some dishes. Ate zucchini and spaghetti and mushrooms for a lovely very late dinner. Fell asleep when I thought I was just going to nap.

  • Monday my nephew turned 8. Wowie! Had to work on a letter at work, and other than that I did some early drawings for the comic and took a nap. Played games with friends and this time my friend Dare joined in, so we have another new face. Did some more drawing and played solitaire on my computer to relax.

  • Tuesday was low-stress at work so I was just keeping up with holiday communications and planning. Got some recipes planned and ingredient lists finalized. Jeaux came over and gave me Five Guys food that he picked up on his way back from an appointment. Got my comic drawn early and did more random card games. Mom keeps not getting her booster shot even though I had asked her to do it so she'd be safe coming to see my sister. Argh.

  • Wednesday was inexplicably super busy so I was very involved with multiple projects all day. I had to handle a bunch of stuff I wasn't familiar with regarding our geotech lab and deal with posting comments from someone's review in a system I don't know much about. But I got it done! After work Jeaux was very late. He was busy trying to solve a work problem and showed up more than 2 hours after he usually does. So by the time we were done grocery shopping, it was hard to find a place to pick up dinner! We ended up getting Five Guys again. And he helped me make a gingerbread cake!

  • Thursday my mom still hadn't gotten her shot. Oh well. Got my day started and this was Cookie Making Day. I made Christmas Fudge, Snowball Cookies, Cream Cheese Mints, and Icicle Cookies, plus I made delicious little white bean and thyme pot pies and made bread dough for rolls. Victor called me even though he'd told me he wouldn't be able to call, but I only talked to him for about half an hour. He's in some shelter. I cleaned up my kitchen after dinner and made a to-do list before bed.

  • Friday I went through my to-do list nice and slowly with plenty of time to relax in between because I'm a good planner. :) I set my bread dough out to warm up, took a shower and had breakfast, made deviled eggs and prepared my cookie platter (including frosting a cake), lit candles for nice scents and opened windows for ventilation, cued up music, prepared my rolls, and . . . then both Jeaux and my mom were late. So I just kinda waited around. Jeaux showed up first and helped me move a table, then started helping with potatoes. Lindsay and Mike showed up next and Mike helped me put the table together (I have to take it apart to move it). Lindsay helped put out the appetizers. Then when Jeaux and Mike got talking about nerdy stuff, Lindsay helped me in the kitchen and we made a sauce together. When she went out to smoke with Mike, Jeaux helped me in the kitchen making scalloped potatoes and cauliflower soup. Mom showed up three hours late but she didn't miss dinner. She brought ham. Had some nice time with my family and it was super great to finally get to see Lindsay. My mom disappeared and fell asleep DURING dinner so she didn't participate in the presents or dessert, but we all exchanged gifts and then had some sweets. After Mike and Lindsay left, Jeaux helped me clean up. Mom got up for a little while but didn't want to go home so she stayed over in the bed.

Health Plan Update:

  • Weight stuff: Holiday weeks have a lot of unusual activity, so I'm not going to worry about what's going on during holidays, though I'm still going to record readings. High weight: 115.7. Low weight: 115.1.
  • Nutrition stuff: I've kept up with my vitamins, but haven't been doing much to keep any eye on my nutritional goals. I've had extra food or weird food almost every day since Tuesday, though at least some of it was pretty healthy!
  • Activity stuff: Walking goals have been met every day except when I narrowly missed it on Saturday (and I don't really count it because it was very close). My low day was Saturday at 9,391 steps, and my high day was Monday at 11,917 steps.

  • Finished Reading: Nothing this week.

    New singing performances:

Personal Digest Saturday: December 11 – December 17

    Life news this week:

    • Saturday I caught up on some unanswered Polos and cleaned up a little. Managed to get blogging done and practiced some music. Ate too much, including minty chocolate. I had a weird mini-sleep before real sleep.

    • Sunday I got up early and had breakfast before Dad came to pick me up for band practice. We had a great practice and then had sushi together. At home I did my laundry and trash chores and I did some more Polos. Fell asleep pretty early.

    • Monday I got up early and had an ordinary day at work. Took a break to go to the post office. Did a little bit of mail catch-up. Mom was going to come over but flaked. I made grilled zucchini for dinner and ate it with horseradish sauce before game night. Accomplished something I've been trying to get done forever: sorting through and deleting screencaps on my phone. I cleaned out my inbox a lot and started working on my photos page again.

    • Tuesday I had a kind of late morning. Ordered some polo shirts for new people at work. Did some proposal outlines too. Did some more photos page stuff and processed a distribution for stock I could now get access to from my previous job. Talked to my sister on Polo and organized presents. Mom again didn't come over because she said she didn't feel motivated. Welp. I sang karaoke instead.

    • Wednesday was slow but I got some work done. Outlined a proposal and made some orders. Jeaux picked me up after work and we went to get our Covid booster shots! Yay. We got our groceries after and went home to watch Colbert and some other fun stuff. We took a walk and he went home early to get some rest. I didn't sleep well, kept waking up.

    • Thursday I was down with after-effects from the shot, which surprised me because I had no side effects from the first two. I still went to work but I needed a couple naps during the day and felt tired, achy, and hot with chills, plus a really sore arm. Victor texted to say he couldn't talk that night but that is just as well since I was zonked out for the rest of the night by about 8 PM. I did get a couple drawings done though.

    • Friday I felt mostly normal again and had a normal day. I apparently bit my lip while sleeping and got a little injury. I woke up super early because of all the sleeping and got a very early start to the day. I got my reports and timesheets done and did a little extra work on graphics. Then after work I finished the comic and talked to Jeaux and got tired early and went to bed.

    Health Plan Update:

    • Weight stuff: Haven't had a ridiculous appetite this week so I did better almost all of the week. High weight: 116.5. Low weight: 114.6.
    • Nutrition stuff: Recommended vitamins all week, doing great with vegetables and fruits, making a solid effort to balance my protein, fat, and carbs almost every day!
    • Activity stuff: I missed my walking goal twice this week. Once was on purpose because I didn't want to push myself to walk while I was recovering from the Covid shot, but the other day was Sunday and I just didn't catch up on walking after band practice. My low day was Thursday at 2,335 steps, and my high day was Monday at 14,170 steps.

Personal Digest Saturday: December 4 – December 10

      Life news this week:

      • Saturday I got up early and had breakfast before Meghan showed up. We hung out and had a smoothie together and then we went out to Disney Springs for shopping and gazing at decorations. I took a snooze on one of the buses but on the way back there was no sleeping because we had standing room only. :o We saw an amazing gingerbread house and some really cool Christmas trees, but as usual the best part for me was just hanging out with her. We had pizza for lunch and Chicken Guy food for dinner. We got home and chilled for a while before going to bed. (I did my blogging before turning in for the night.)

      • Sunday Meg and I hung out until she had to get back home. We took a walk and talked--nothing fancy. After she left I did laundry and karaoke, took out the trash, did a bit of holiday shopping, caught up on Polos, and found out that someone I was talking to on Reddit found the last figure for my collection (for some toys only available in Mexico). Yay! I answered some messages but still way behind on everything.

      • Monday I had a letter to send out at work. I also finished my laundry and made Polos. Did a little bit of shopping too and talked to my mom on the phone. And I played games with friends.

      • Tuesday was the release of Centaurworld Season 2 so I made pancakes in the morning (they are called "gigglecakes" on the show) and I ate them for breakfast. Then I had to go to a meeting and that turned into two meetings for the day. I did some more shopping and after work I talked to Tony (who was a day earlier than usual doing the yard) and Jeaux came over to eat pizza and watch Season 2 of Centaurworld, which we definitely enjoyed.

      • Wednesday was super slow at work but I still got some stuff done. Wrapped up my shopping mostly and arranged my next doctor's appointment. We had our usual Jeaux Day after work (we didn't save Centaurworld for our usual day because we have too much to get done); we did our grocery shopping and ended up watching the last episodes of season 1 of Hilda, after which we saw Colbert and took our walks.

      • Thursday was still slow at work so I was able to get ahead on my reports. Did another scheduling for appointments and worked on some music stuff. Had to fix some documents for my co-workers. Victor called a little earlier than usual and told me about getting scammed. Very frustrating. (He still doesn't have a place.) I was exhausted and went to bed.

      • Friday I caught up on Polos and was a little busier at the office. Talked to my mom and got my comic done after work. Not much else going on.
      Health Plan Update:

      • Weight stuff: No change, which isn't a good thing. I had a lot of unusual eating this week because of different circumstances so I can't really expect significant changes to start yet. High weight: 116.5. Low weight: 115.1.
      • Nutrition stuff: Have been successfully taking my recommended vitamins all week, marginally decent on the vegetables, and have been incorporating carrots into my diet most days to help with my chronically deficient Vitamin A.
      • Activity stuff: I made my walking goal every day this week. My low day was Sunday at 10,888 steps, and my high day was PROBABLY Saturday but the step counter froze while I was at Disney Springs so I don't know what it was; the highest recorded step count I have was Friday at 20,760 steps.

Personal Digest Saturday: November 27 – December 3

        Life news this week:

        • Saturday I got my blogging done but it took way longer than I meant it to. I managed to record a Letters to an Asexual video too and made some Polos for people I talk to. But the day mostly involved avoiding productivity somehow.

        • Sunday I made a graphic for my office's Hanukkah post on LinkedIn. I'm not great at designing graphics but I guess I'm passable at it. Also I did laundry, recorded some karaoke, talked to my friend Sarah, took out the trash, and posted my latest video. I also worked on my podcast. At night I lit candles for Hanukkah and had some latkes. And I decided to plan to have a Christmas Eve party.

        • Monday was mostly involved with a proposal. Then I worked out my drawings for my So You Write comic and drew and colored it while talking to my friends and playing games.

        • Tuesday I was caught up in coordination for proposals and letters. I also took a break to go to the doctor for my yearly checkup. I got a flu shot! And was told I need to take Vitamin D and Red Yeast Rice supplement. And I need to make a couple appointments for radiology. After work I posted my comic and caught up with Polos and worked on my podcast video.

        • Wednesday I worked on a letter with my newest co-worker. I had to edit it twice because he made changes on an old version, haha. Also had to go to a meeting and used a virtual background for the first time! Cool. I outlined a couple proposals coming up and wrangled some documents. After work Jeaux and I ate at Panera in their outdoor area, and we got our shopping done. (I got my supplements.) We watched Colbert, took a walk, and watched the film Tick...Tick...BOOM! which was pretty good. I did some household cleaning and posted my podcast.

        • Thursday I was grungy and cleaned up the rest of the crap in the house, and at work I worked on technical support for someone who couldn't connect and making reports. Victor called in the evening and told me about what's been going on for him. It's not going great and he still needs to find a place to live.

        • Friday it was foggy in the morning! I did my upcoming project reports and administrative stuff at work, finally finished cleanup/laundry and grabbed a shower while I was supposed to be working, so I stayed late to finish reading a letter. Then after work I finished my webcomic and posted it and my mom called after midnight because her volume was too low while she was trying to watch Andy Griffith on the phone and hoped I could fix it. Haha.

        • Weight stuff: Having some issues with eating at weird times just because I want to, not because I'm hungry. Going to have to work on that. High weight: 115.7. Low weight: 114.6.
        • Nutrition stuff: I'm now taking a supplement for Vitamin D and also Red Yeast Rice, and other than that I've done somewhat well with adding more vegetables (mainly spinach) but I've also eaten a lot of sugar.
        • Activity stuff: I made my walking goal every day this week except Friday when I barely missed it. My low day was Friday at 9,883 steps, and my high day was Thursday at 16,795 steps.

Personal Digest Saturday: November 20 – November 26

          Life news this week:

          • Saturday I was all messed up because I went to bed early. I went and talked to Tony because he was mowing the lawn on a weird day to get stuff done before the holidays, and then I got my stuff ready to do a podcast with Daria. I put away some of my SU display and I made a yummy tofu and mushrooms dish with a peanut and soy sauce combo. In the evening I recorded the first two episodes of Season 3 with Daria ("Super Watermelon Island" and "Gem Drill"), and then I spent too much time on Reddit replying to comments on the merch post.

          • Sunday was supposed to be band practice but there was a potential Covid risk (turned out: not Covid, but we were being safe), so instead of meeting my dad came to my place and I made him waffles. He got to see my partially put away SU display which still looked like a museum. We did some piano/voice duets and had a good time. After he left I did Sunday chores, did karaoke, finished my blogging late, and caught up with Polos.

          • Monday I was up early for work. It was a relatively slow day even though we had a letter due. I worked on an upcoming proposal. I responded to some old YouTube comments and put away some laundry, and I played games with my friends in the evening and posted merch on Amino.

          • Tuesday work was a little busier because I got a bunch of info to go on putting the package together for our proposal. After work I made Polos for Meg and P and put more SU stuff away. I answered more YouTube messages and posted silly things about recipes on Reddit. I got a lot of people trying to stump me and no one could. :)

          • Wednesday work was pretty slow as you'd expect, but I was busy working on my proposal stuff. Also got to work with another office's admin to do some Thanksgiving mail-outs. I responded to more recipe suggestions and still no one came up with a recipe I have not done. I finally finished putting away my SU merch collection in the evening and got my living room back to normal (which involved moving furniture and putting two bookshelves' worth of books back on the shelves).

          • Thursday we had the day off for Thanksgiving. I spent the morning just chilling and drinking coffee. Then later Jeaux came over and made some food--we didn't have a Jeaux Day on Wednesday because we did not want to go to the grocery store on the day before Thanksgiving. Jeaux made a Tofurky dish, potatoes, two vegetable bags, his first tray of biscuits ever, and some gravy. My mom came over and ate a teeny bit like she usually does, but she actually ate more than usual and ended up resting on the couch for a long time. Jeaux also showed me some funny videos, and I had to fix some stuff on my mom's phone, but that was it.

          • Friday I had the day off and struggled to get anything done. I ate some leftovers and worked on my comic and that was it. I had a nice nap. :)

          Interviews, Articles, Mentions:

          Health Plan Update:

          • Weight stuff: A little better this week with the more intentional choices, though I had some waffles lying around that made their mark. High weight: 115.1. Low weight: 114.6.
          • Nutrition stuff: I did a little better with protein this week than last week, and am keeping up with vegetables, though not as well as last week. Thanksgiving was calorie-heavy but also helped with vegetables because I had a lot of them (corn, mushrooms, broccoli, and carrots!).
          • Activity stuff: I made my walking goal every day this week. My low day was Wednesday at 10,021 steps, and my high day was Sunday at 20,278 steps.
          Books Read:
          • Finished Reading: Nothing this week.

            New singing performances:

This week's karaoke song is "Sunny Came Home" by Shawn Colvin.
