My haircut

In case you didn't see on, oh, Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr, yes, I cut my hair!

This is absolutely the shortest I've had my hair since 1990. When I was in like seventh grade.

Weird how little I've changed.
I haven't had a haircut in ten years. This is me right after the last time I cut my hair, in 2004:

Long hair has always been kinda my trademark. And I guess it's a good one for me because I'm so little that it doesn't take that long to grow it so it extends an appreciable distance down my back. I have spent most of my life with hair past my waist. But ever since I was about 18, I haven't been able to maintain healthy hair at that length for some reason. Maybe because I started putting it in weird styles or something.

But really, the last foot of my hair, at least, was really raggedy for years before this chop. I decided to make a deliberate effort to take care of it really well, get regular trims every eight weeks, and document how long it takes for it to grow back. Here are my before pictures:

And here are my after pictures on the day I got it cut:

I don't really like having short hair, but it's not bothering me the way it did when I got the last haircut ten years ago. It's kind of a novelty to not have it in the way of a purse strap and not having to put it up to go to the bathroom or brush my teeth, and certain styles look really different--if I pull it back with clips on either side it's really perky looking, and people keep saying it makes me look younger (which I guess should be a good thing as I'm in my mid-thirties?). I'll enjoy it while it lasts, but it'll get long again pretty fast.

  1. Wow. That is a big change. I've never had long hair like that. Once it gets to a certain length, it just looks bad. But I've never had really short hair either. I'm in between. But when I do get a cut with a few inches off, it feels really weird at first, so I can't imagine having that much cut off.

    1. Yep! Huge change! It's sort of weird that it's so short . . . it's almost like I'm wearing a wig. :D

  2. It's cute! As a lifelong (almost) long-haired person myself, I can also say that it's still long. Just not REALLY long. :) If that makes it any less bothersome.

    1. Yeah, I was saying to the stylist that my hair is still long according to some people's standards! :D But it's kinda weird that the guy friend I go to lunch with every week now has longer hair than I do, and he just hasn't cut it for a while out of laziness.

  3. You look great. It definitely looks much healthier shorter--I hope you can maintain that as it grows out again. I remember that haircut 10 years ago. You were super unhappy! You're lucky your hair gets long so fast, though. :)

    1. Thanks Widdle Wonni. Yeah, for some reason I'm not upset at all this time even though it's quite a bit shorter than that time. I wonder what's different? Maybe I just have a different attitude now. Or I'm 10 years older, haha. But yeah, it's so straight and it grows fast. And I'm in good health so my hair should grow strong. I just got some leave-in conditioner for it to help protect it.

  4. It’s good that you’ve decided to try a different hairstyle, especially since it looks great on you. You look younger, and I’m sure you find it less of a hassle to maintain. You should not be afraid to try new hairstyles from time to time. Anyway, have you let it grow out over the past year, or did you cut it short again from time to time? Whichever you decided, I hope you are happy with how it looked like afterwards. Cheers!

    1. Glad you like it. I don't really care about looking young though. I like having long hair. I don't know how you found this more-than-a-year-old entry, but I post monthly updates of my hair and yes, it has grown a lot. I like the choices I've made about my hair so no advice on how much I ought to change is necessary, but thank you!
