You can't have a minority character without it being interpreted as a response to the popular cultural perception. The very inclusion of minority is read as a "sensationalism" of the fact. I'd like to hope as the internet brings more cultural bleeding the backlash and accusation of including minority characters as drawing attention to or sensationalizing "otherness" will become less pronounced in our fictional spaces. And hopefully through that eventually our society. The more society does away with it's attitude of "otherness" toward minorities then the inclusion of white, male, heterosexual template character will lessen. How much that can happen though is the question. If we reach a point were a persons character is not assumed on their race, nor is their sex, orientation, and gender assumed to fit the commonly perceived default binary; then what will be assumed about them? Will we reinvent something else to other those around us? (I'm going to guess cyborg hate crime, or probably more class divergence) Weshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10945361181604383070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8793202434796167753.post-71496760885794405232014-03-06T13:39:36.880-05:002014-03-06T13:39:36.880-05:00Don't know. I know there are a lot of cultures...Don't know. I know there are a lot of cultures more homogenous than the USA, and it isn't weird for their fiction to reflect that if it's set in their own country. But it's kinda absurd when people whitewash fiction set in areas that actually are more multicultural OR create fantasy worlds that have NO demographic diversity and insist it "has to be" that way because of perceived historical accuracy. (Their belief that there just were no PoC in spaces relevant to the story is usually because of how ridiculously whitewashed history is, but it also plays into how many white people assume someone is white unless it's specified otherwise.)Julie Sondra Deckerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15755582329896793392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8793202434796167753.post-71684735922685732682014-03-06T13:26:31.725-05:002014-03-06T13:26:31.725-05:00inaccurate historical accuracy aside, that "d...inaccurate historical accuracy aside, that "diversity thing promotion"? It's pretty much a north america and a UK, thing, isn't it?

Other places are not expected to include persons of colours in their fiction works. ex: the lack of diversity in the majority of anime. books from arabic and spanish countries. Chinese fiction works rarely include the sort of demographic diversity that is expected from american works. And saying that a bollywood movie is "all indian people" as a criticism is kinda funny. isn't it?

your thoughts? Marihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15965019001674007149noreply@blogger.com
